Physical Education

The emphasis of the physical education program is to prepare professionals in health and physical education to work in school districts, as entry level personnel in sport organizations, as recreation and fitness professionals, as coaches and in other private agencies.

The following fields of study are available through this program:

  • Physical Education
    • Licensure K-12
    • Community PE
    • Sport and Recreation Management
  • Athletic Training (available as a minor only)
  • Coaching (available as a minor only)
  • Health Education (available as a minor only)

Students interested in New Mexico licensure for Physical Education should enroll in the endorsement programs. The Physical Education endorsement is available to students in elementary, secondary or special education.

This active professional education program provides extensive field experiences that prepare students for mastery of professional standards as recognized by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) which is a part of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).

The College of Education and Technology provides students with opportunities to use their education skills to hold leadership positions in organizations such as AAHPERD and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

All advisors are full-time faculty in their areas of expertise. They check student progress using multiple methods to assess student work.

Methods courses utilize knowledge about the individual and developmental needs of children and adults while integrating issues for diversity and students with disabilities.

The program incorporates the use of technology in classroom instruction.
