Requirements for Student Teaching Semester

All students must attend a mandatory preapplication meeting where they will receive additional instructions to complete their admission to the student teaching semester.

  1. All major, minor and endorsement areas must be completed before applying for the student teaching semester.
    1. Secondary education student teachers must complete all requirements for major and minor with a GPA of 2.8 in both areas.
    2. Elementary and special education student teachers must complete all requirements for major and endorsements with a GPA of 2.8 in all areas.
  2. An application for admission to student teaching must be completed by the student and submitted to the Office of Teacher Education by the application deadline of the fall or spring semester preceding the semester of enrollment in student teaching.
  3. Complete a minimum of 96 hours towards degree before applying to student teaching. Student teaching and seminar will fulfill the final 12 hours required for degree licensure.
  4. Complete the following courses with a C or better. SPED majors must complete courses with a B or better.
    1. Elementary: EDF 222, BLED 350, ELED 380, RED 350, RED 375, ELED 400, and ELED 412. The following electives are strongly recommended: EDF 301, RED 315, RED 317, HPE 433 and HPE 473.
    2. Secondary: EDF 222, EDF 301, SPED 305, SED 380, BLED 350, SED 410, RED 495 and a methods course from your major and minor area.
    3. *Special Education: EDF 222 (prerequisite to SPED 330 and 338), SPED 300, SPED 330, SPED 338, SPED 411, SPED 412, SPED 413, RED 350 AND RED 375. The following elective is strongly recommended: **EDF 301
  5. Receive positive evaluations from early field experiences.
  6. Take and pass the Basic Skills and Teacher Competency portions of the New Mexico Teacher Assessment tests. The Content Area test must also be taken and passed before student teaching.
  7. The fingerprinting and background check requirements must be completed for the district in which you plan to student teach.

*SPED majors must complete courses with a “B” or better.
