National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)

NCATE - The Standard of Excellence in Teacher PreparationThe College of Education and Technology is nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). NCATE is responsible for the voluntary national accreditation of colleges and universities for the preparation of teachers and other school professionals at the elementary, middle and secondary levels. NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation (CORPA).

The essential function of NCATE is to provide an external, professional judgment of the quality of the education unit (at ENMU the unit is the College of Education and Technology) because it has primary responsibility for the initial and continuing preparation of teachers and other school or education personnel. The NCATE accreditation process also encourages the continuous improvement of the unit. Accountability and improvement in teacher preparation are central to the mission of NCATE.

Accreditation assures the public that institutions have met rigorous standards. Accreditation links national standards for teacher preparation with national standards for students. Accreditation encourages excellence in curriculum, students, faculty and resources in college and universities. Accreditation includes the institution in the profession's newly emerging quality-assurance system. Accreditation establishes common professional standards for preparation of teachers and other school personnel. Accreditation ensures adequate resources to prepare quality personnel to improve student learning.
