Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Graduate Coordinator: Dr. Romelia Hurtado de Vivas

The on-site Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program (formerly known as the English as a Second Language program) is a 12-credit hour TESOL endorsement approved by the New Mexico Public Education Department. It is a school-based model for professional development.

This program, developed in conjunction with Kansas State University, features a number of alternative learning strategies:

  • No campus attendance
  • Flexible scheduling to meet the needs of teachers at your location
  • Collaborative work in groups
  • Experiential learning
  • Ties to classroom and school activity
  • Practical and relevant learning experiences

The program will provide you with the knowledge, skills and dispositions to teach students with English as a second language.

Program activities include:

  • Lectures delivered through video
  • Group study activities
  • Reflective journaling
  • Action Research
  • Portfolio approach

Instructors will meet with you in person in various locations around the state for the first and last class sessions. During the semester, you will meet with other participants in groups and set your own pace and schedule for video viewing and related activities.

This endorsement may be applied to various master's degrees within ENMU's College of Education and Technology. Please contact an advisor listed below for more information.
