She imagines a tiger in her room and gets up, then a giant and gets out of bed again. Then she sees a crack in the ceiling and gets out of bed again, then realizing she forgot to brush her teeth. After brushing her teeth, she is sent to bed again. She gets up once more and her father explains to her that it is her job to go to sleep so she can be rested for school, and she does not get up again until morning.

There are rules for good health at the end. This book is rather long and may not be appropriate for very young children.
Arthur's Chicken Pox

Grandma Thora came over to take care of Arthur. His friends brought his homework and his father brought Arthur stickers and cough drops. When Arthur felt itchy his Grandma Thora made him a bath and let him drink juice out of a crazy straw. D.W. felt jealous so she pretended to have the chicken pox to but when Grandma Thora made her a special bath her chicken pox washed off. Soon Arthur was feeling better and went to the circus with his family. D.W. unfortunately caught the chicken pox from Arthur and had to stay home.
The Berenstain Bears Don't Pollute Anymore

Summary: Papa Bear was reading the paper and found a headline that said Bear County was in big trouble because of all of the pollution. Papa Bear ignored the headline and said that a couple of soda cans and wrappers on the side of the road wouldn't hurt anyone. Brother told Papa that maybe pollution was a problem. Brother had a very hard time doing his homework that night because he was troubled. He wasn't sure that Papa was right because if you looked at it from other perspectives you can see the pollution. The next day Brother and Sister visited Professor Actual Factual to find out the truth. The professor told them that they are endangered species because they were polluting everything they needed to survive. The professor took them to see pollution that was going on in their very county. They saw fish choking on soda containers and chopped down forests. The cubs suggested that the professor talk to other cubs in school if he wanted to get his message across. He explained ecology, conservation and recycling to the cubs. The cubs had some of their own ideas on how to help the environment. The cubs even decided to start a club just for environment. When the cubs told Papa Bear about what they had done that day, he still didn't believe that pollution was a problem. That night Papa had a nightmare that the trees of the forest were out to get him. When the cubs had a parade to promote awareness, Papa changed his mind and helped them.
Rufus Comes Home

Summary: Brian felt very sick for a few weeks. When his parents took him to the doctor, the doctor told him that he has diabetes and must go to the hospital. When he was at the hospital Brian found out that he has too much sugar in his blood and that his body can't turn the excess sugar into energy. Brian's pancreas was not making enough insulin so Brian would have to have insulin shots every day. Brian learned about his highs (when he has too much sugar in his blood) and his lows (when there isn't enough sugar to counteract the insulin shots). However Brian was sad because he didn't have anyone special to share his feelings about diabetes with. When his Grandma came to visit him in the hospital, his mom went to run errands and found a special bear. She sewed patches on the bear, made him a special medical bracelet like Brian has, and put him in a T-shirt for diabetes. Brian loved the bear and felt much better knowing he had someone to share his feelings with.
Wash Your Hands,

The Little Princess then dances with the dog but is told by the cook that she must wash her hands again. After she goes to the bathroom the king tells her to wash her hands again. Finally the Little Princess gets an explanation for why she has to keep washing her hands. After she sneezes the maid tells her about germs and where they come from and where they go. She also explains that germs are what make the Little Princess sick. The Little Princess washes her hands one more time. When she receives her cake she questions whether the maid has washed her hands.
Arthur's Eyes

Age range: This book is good for children that are younger, around preschool or kindergarten, to help them understand what some of the signs of needing glasses are. Than they can get checked if they think they need to.
Summary: In this story Arthur got headaches, could not see the board, and could not really read his book. Finally he went to the doctor and got new glasses but the kids in his class made fun of him. He decided he was going to tell his teacher he lost them and when he was not wearing them he accidently walked into the girl's bathroom. He talked to his principle and found out he wore glasses too and figured out they really did help him get better grades and play sports better, and he started wearing them all the time.

Summary: This book explains how old you are when you get certain teeth, the inside of a tooth and also explains the loss of a tooth. It also goes over tooth decay and how to prevent it by showing how to properly brush and floss one's teeth.

Age range: This book is also aimed towards the 2nd or 3rd graders due to its more complex concepts. They do show pictures and give example of activities that a child can do to stay healthy but is mostly facts that a younger child would not be interested in.
Summary: This book explains about muscles, why one needs to warm-up and cool-down during the process of exercising, how we can exercise as a team or by oneself, and also explains why plenty of sleep is good for a person's health. This is a fact book.

After stating the emergency and what would be going on while rescue was coming, it says “Help is coming. It's on the way!” This type of story is for children ages 3-5.
Never Talk to Strangers

Summary: This book describes different situations in which someone that the child is unfamiliar with may approach them. However, it uses different animals instead of “strangers” or different adults so as to avoid stereotypes. Yet at the end of every rhyme is stated “Never talk to strangers.” The last three animals however are situations in which it is okay to talk to someone you have never met before, such as if a family member or friend introduces them to you. This book would be good for children anywhere from ages 3-6.
Blue Bug's Safety Book

On each page with the picture of the safety sign, it tells what blue bug must do to follow the signs and stay safe. The last page has all of the signs to go over again with the children. This is a good book for children age 3-4.

How to stay safe at home and online

Summary: In the story the children are left at home and online by themselves. Parents make sure the child knows they are responsible for their own safety. The child is told not to open doors for anyone. Always be aware that some adults try to trick them. If the adult doesn't go away they are allowed to call the police. Children online should never give out addresses, phone number and their name.

The Berenstain Bears Learn about Strangers

Summary: Brother and Sister Bear looked alike and, although they had different interests, they also shared many interests. Brother bear was very cautious and wary of strangers. Sister was friendly to everyone. Brother was worried about Sister because she talked to everyone. Brother told Sister that she needed to be more careful but when sister asked why she had to be careful, he went to their parents for the answers. Papa told sister never to take things from strangers or go anywhere with strangers because it's dangerous. Papa showed sister the newspaper that had headlines of missing cubs and strangers who bothered cubs. Papa bear scared Sister bear and she didn't sleep all night. She was worried about strangers. Sister didn't want to go outside the next day. When she went with Brother to go play Frisbee, all of the strangers looked mean and scary to her. Mama talks to Sister and explains that not all strangers are bad and that Sister shouldn't walk around sacred, just cautious. Mama told sister that you cannot judge people by their looks and that scary looking people are not always mean and normal looking people are not all nice. When Brother asks Sister if she would like to go fly airplanes outside she says yes. When they are outside a stranger asks Brother if he would like to ride in a car with him to follow a bigger plane. Sister stops him and runs home to tell their parents. Mama and Papa remind Brother that he is never supposed to get into a car with strangers. In the back of the book there are rules that Brother and Sister follow.
Bike Riding

In Water

Be careful when you pick where you swim. Look for place without rocks or obstacles. Have a buddy with you when you swim because you can look out for each other. Water can be too deep or have strong currents and undertows so if you don't know the water don't swim in it. Don't swim if you don't feel good or are tired and leave to water if there is a thunderstorm. Don't swim over to a drowning person because they might drag you under. If you are out of the pool you may be able to extend a stick for the person to grab and pull them to safety. Wear a life jacket if you are going to be traveling in a boat. Life jackets are designed to keep you afloat. Don't skate on thin ice.

They explain in very simple terms how to be safe on a bike and all of the rules. A teacher could even bring in helmets to try on and show them how they are supposed to be properly fitted.

Age range: This book would be good for preschoolers or kindergartners. It will help them learn basic safety tips that he goes over in his speeches. It will also keep their attention since there is a dog and the story is about friendship and there are a lot of big colorful pictures.
Summary: This book is about an officer who goes to school to make speeches about safety but the children do not pay attention to him until he gets a dog from his department. Officer Buckle does not know that the dog is just doing tricks in the background and that is why everyone is so interested in his speeches; after he finds that out he quits. So the dog tries to go and do tricks by himself but the speech is not as good without the Officer there so he comes back.
Dot the Fire Dog

Age range: This is a good book for preschooler because it lets them know that if there is ever a fire that fire fighters are people that will help you. Also there are tips in the back of the book for teachers to go over. Children can participate when they show the fire truck in the book by making the noise of a fire truck; and also this book can help start the discussion of stop, drop, and roll.
Summary: This book is about a dog, Dot, who works in a fire house and has to go save an old man sick in bed and a kitten from a fire in the house. After everyone is safe at that house he goes back to the fire station to help someone again soon.

When it cracks and doesn't squish all over, he is very excited and finishes pulling the egg apart and lets it fall into the bowl. Then he eats his breakfast. This is most probably appropriate for children ages 3-5.
Stone Soup

Summary: A boy walking down the road becomes very hungry. When he stops to ask an old woman for some food however, she does not want to give him any, so he asks for a stone with which to make soup. Intrigued, the woman lets him in and starts to boil water for the stone soup. The boy tells her that it would cook faster and smell a little better with some onions and carrots, which she retrieves from the garden and puts them into the soup. When she says that the soup looks good, he says it would look better with some chicken, and taste better with a beef bone. They continue to put in ingredients in this manner until it is ready and “fit for a king”. Then they both sit down to eat the soup together because the old woman was impressed by soup from a stone. This story is great for children anywhere from 4-8.

Good Enough to Eat

Vitamins are found in plants and animals and minerals are found in rocks and metal. If you eat a variety of food you should get all the vitamins and minerals you need. Everybody Bakes Bread

Although they don't have a rolling pin they do let Carrie try some of their bread. At the next neighbors house Carrie helped her friends make Italian bread but they didn't have a rolling pin either. The next house she went to had just made corn bread for church but Carrie got to try one anyways. They didn't have a rolling pin either. The next place Carrie went was to a family who lived above the restaurant they owned. They had made pocket bread and Carrie ate some with them. Carrie wasn't paying attention and got splashed by a car so her neighbor, Mrs. Max, brought her home to dry off. They had challah and soaked their feet in warm water. When Carrie told Mrs. Max what she needed Mrs. Max laughed and Carrie realized that her mom had played a trick on her so her and her brother would stop fighting. At the last house Carrie went to she was offered pupusa by new friends from El Salvador. When Carrie got home she told her mom that she knew she had been tricked but by going around the neighborhood she had gathered enough kids to play kickball later. When her mom told her it was lunchtime, Carrie told her that she was too full from all of the bread that she had eaten earlier that day. There are also recipes for all the breads mentioned in the back of this book.
D.W. the Picky Eater
