News ArchivesKathleen Donalson has been awarded the 2008 Texas Tech. University College of Education's Outstanding Doctoral Student of the Year Award. Ms. Donalson is a doctoral student at Texas Tech. in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in language and literacy. Kathleen Donalson was also awarded the Distinguish Presentation Award for her presentations at the AERA (American Educational Research Association) held in Chicago and the NMAEYC (New Mexico Association for Education of Young Children) held in Albuquerque. Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Dr. Roland Persson of Norway have a chapter included in the International Handbook of Giftedness to be published by Springer Science. Michael F. Shaughnessy recently served as Guest Editor of Gifted Education International- Vol 24, No 1. Dr. Michael Shaughnessy has published a book review of "When Research Matters: How Scholarship Influences Education Policy," edited by Frederick Hess. Dr. Jerry Harmon, dean of the College of Education and Technology, presented his second keynote speech of the semester Saturday, April 19, as part of the NM Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development at the organization's annual conference at ENMU-Roswell. The title of the speech was "Playing With Empowered Voices." On Jan. 7, Dr. Harmon presented "Playfulness and Multiple Literacy" to the ENMERC winter professional development conference held on the Portales campus. These messages are being heard by over 800 area and state educators. Dr. Romelia Hurtado de Vivas, assistant professor in the College of Education and Technology, presented at "The First Borderland's Early Literacy Day" at New Mexico State University on April 12. The topic of her presentation was "Whose Illiteracy? A needed dialogue between parents and teachers" Dr. Jordan Kobritz, assistant professor of sport management, addressed the sport marketing class at Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business on April 14 on the subject of "Theory to Practice in Sport Marketing." Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Cynthia Kleyn-Kennedy, doctoral student at TTU, have had an article published in the latest issue of Educational Technology Vol 48, no 3. May-June 2008 issue. Dr. Robin A. Wells, assistant professor of special education, served as a delegate from the New Mexico Council for Exceptional Children (NM CEC) state association to the Representative Assembly at the 2008 Council for Exceptional Children Convention & Expo held April 2-5 in Boston, Mass. The 111 member representative assembly was comprised of state and provincial organizations, and division representation. Robin A. Wells, Ph.D., assistant professor of special education, facilitated a session at the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Convention & Expo held in Boston, Mass. on April 3. The session was titled, "Theory to Practice: Is Preservice Preparation Missing Something?" Panel members from ENMU community were Dr. Wells, Rebecca S. Davis, Ed.D., assistant professor of special education, and Amberlynn Mauldin a graduate student in special education and a Special Educator at Portales Junior High School. Her presentation was titled: "Parents are Parents, Not Teachers: The Urgency for Culturally Responsive Critical Family Literacy for Teachers." Robin A. Wells, Ph.D., assistant professor of special education, presented a workshop session "Smoothing the Way!" regarding transitions supports at the New Mexico Association for the Education of Young Children (NMAEYC) Conference held March 29 in Albuquerque. Dr. Michael Shaughnessy recently interviewed Reid Lyon about "Reading First". Agriculture major Jared Green made the final eight of Fox Sports Network's "Toughest Cowboy" competition. Eastern New Mexico University and College of Education graduate Brian O'Neill has been appointed by New Mexico governor Bill Richardson to the post of Executive Director of the New Mexico Sports Authority. Dr. Darron L. Smith, Department of Agriculture, and ENMU undergraduates Alexandra Brooks and Julia Acree recently published an article titled Intensive Grazing Management for Beef Cattle Production. The article can be found in the Spring 2008 edition of Keystone Cattlemen. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Susan W. Fulgham, doctoral student at Texas Tech, have had an article published in Educational Technology. It appears in the March-April 2008 issue. Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Dr. Stan Pogrow have a paper accepted for publication in the North American Journal of Psychology. Scholarship applications by students in the College of Education and Technology for the academic year 2008-2009 are due in Dean Harmon's office, ED156, not later than March 1. Scholarships are available for HPE, sports science, FCS, agriculture, elementary, secondary, and special education, and business education. A monograph titled Counseling and Disabilities: Needed Counseling Concerns Relative to Educational Psychology and Special Education that was written by Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Dr. Mary Kallus of ENMU, Dan Greathouse of the Portales Schools, Jennella Crouch, Effie Laman, ( former ENMU graduate students) Marilyn Haight, Susan Walsh Veronikas, of Texas Tech and Stephanie Raitt and Judy Madewell of the University of New Mexico has been published by Nova Sciences as a separate monograph. The paper had appeared in a previous text, and is now available through Nova Sciences. Moriarty native Diego Espinoza has joined the Heather Wilson for Senate campaign team. Espinoza grew up in Moriarty and received a bachelors degree in education from Eastern. While a student, he was appointed to the ENMU Board of Regents to fill a vacated Republican position. He served Congresswoman Heather Wilson in community outreach in 2007 before moving to the Senate campaign late last year. Espinoza will serve as Field Representative for Southern New Mexico, where he will build and organize the grassroots effort for Heather Wilson's U.S. Senate campaign. Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Dr. Robin Wells have an article appearing in the next issue of Gifted Education International. Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Drs. Alan and Nadeen Kaufman have a paper appearing in the latest issue of the North American Journal of Psychology. Drs. Alan and Nadeen Kaufman are the authors of the K-ABC-II and the K-TEA-2, two very influential tests of intelligence and achievement. Gorman Swinney, who has a master's from ENMU, is a finalist for Shiprock's Central Consolidated School District's superintendent position. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Melissa Winkle have had a paper accepted for publication in Exceptional Parent, slated to be published in May of this year. Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy, Thomas C. Reeves and S.M. Fulgham have an article appearing in Educational Technology, Jan -Feb 08 issue, Vol 48, No. 1. |
